Most smart meter owners check their in-home display occasionally and leave it at that. But your smart meter is generating detailed half-hourly usage data that, if you actually look at it, can reveal exactly where your energy money is going — and point to specific changes that will bring your bills down.

Accessing Your Data Through Your Supplier's App

Every major energy supplier offers an app or online account where you can view your smart meter data in detail. Once you're logged in, look for usage graphs broken down by day, week, and month. Most apps also show your data in half-hour intervals — this granular view is where the useful insights live.

If you haven't set up your online account yet, it takes about five minutes and is well worth doing.

Identifying Your Baseline Usage

Look at your half-hourly data for a period in the middle of the night — say 2am to 4am — when no one is awake and nothing should be running except essentials. This is your standby baseline: fridge, freezer, router, any devices on standby. For most households, this should be under 0.2–0.3 kWh per half-hour.

If your overnight baseline is higher than expected, something is drawing more power than it should. Common culprits: a chest freezer that's too cold, a gaming console left on, or an older appliance running continuously.

Spot Usage Spikes

Compare your half-hourly usage on different days. Look for spikes — large jumps in consumption at specific times. These correspond to high-power appliances: electric showers, ovens, tumble dryers, kettles. Seeing the cost impact of, say, running the tumble dryer versus air-drying makes the trade-off concrete and often motivates change.

Compare Your Usage Over Time

Weekly and monthly comparisons are useful for tracking the impact of changes you make. Fitted loft insulation? Check your heating usage the following month against the same period last year. Switched to a more efficient appliance? The data will confirm whether it made a difference.

Many supplier apps now show year-on-year comparisons automatically, which makes this easy.

Use Your Data to Choose the Right Tariff

If your data shows you use a lot of electricity in the evenings and at weekends (a common pattern for families at home), a time-of-use tariff that offers cheaper off-peak rates could save you money. Some tariffs offer very cheap or even free electricity at certain hours — your smart meter data can tell you how much you currently use during those hours, letting you model the saving accurately.

Third-Party Apps for Deeper Insights

Apps like Loop, Hugo Energy, or Bright (which connects to your smart meter via the DCC network) offer more sophisticated analysis than most supplier apps — including carbon tracking, appliance-level estimates, and personalised tips. They're free to use and worth trying if you want to go deeper.
